Amazon Handmade registration. Crafting a Business with Handmade Products on Amazon

More and more people are turning their hobbies and art into businesses every day. I see it all day long on social media and the many online marketplaces.

Whether it’s woodworking, paintings, or custom clothing, people are realizing they can make real money and reach an insane amount of people with their crafts.

In 2021, there were approximately 96.3 million active buyers who purchased goods through the Etsy ecosystem. This figure represents an increase of almost 18 percent from the 81.9 million buyers in the previous year.

It’s clear… hand-crafted products are here to stay. What starts for many artists as merely a quirky hobby, now has the potential to become a viable business with a large and hungry audience .
The current state of the “quarantine life” has further fueled desires for many people to look for a “side hustle”. Being stuck inside your home gives you a lot of time to think. Also, with so many industries being inadvertently upended due to the pandemic, more and more people are thinking about extra ways to earn income.
Whatever the reason, there has been an explosion of people turning their crafts into real income.
With the rampant growth of e-commerce in the past several months, Amazon Handmade is the perfect place to showcase your handmade products.

Amazon Handmade Benefits

Amazon Handmade is a special part of Amazon reserved for artists and makers. It caters specifically to that audience in a few ways.
1. You have a “makers profile” with a custom URL (similar to a traditional brand storefront on Amazon) Check out BenShot USA , a long-time seller on Amazon Handmade.
2. Amazon waives the $39.99 monthly fee that is associated with a professional selling account.
3. There is a just flat 15% referral fee for each sale. No transaction or processing fees .
4. You can send your products using Amazon FBA.
5. You can take advantage of Amazon’s PPC platform and other promotional tools like running special coupons.
6. You can also gain access to Amazon’s Brand Registry once you have a trademark.

7. Lastly, Amazon Handmade has its own dedicated support for most issues.

Amazon Handmade Disadvantages

While Amazon Handmade is a great place to showcase your crafts, there are a few downsides when comparing a “handmade” listing to a “traditional” Amazon listing.
1. A handmade listing only indexes off the title and backend terms (yes, you can index for other terms later through PPC).
2. Technically, there are no bullet points (the description is in place of where bullet points typically go). You can use some simple HTML to have your description look like bullet points but don’t go crazy with the HTML. Keep it simple .
3. The backend is very different. It allows for sellers to showcase the customization options of your listing but variations aren’t part of it. If you have three different styles of a bracelet, for example, they have to be three different listings.

To most sellers in Handmade, these differences are irrelevant.

Frequently Asked Questions

Now, a couple of questions I get asked all the time about selling handmade are always about reviews and rankings.
1. Can you rank a handmade product for a keyword onto page one of the main category? (ex. Beauty & Personal Care)
Absolutely. Amazon does not suppress your listing simply because it’s in the handmade category. You can get your product onto page one with your major keywords.
2. Can you ask people to leave a review for handmade products?
Yes! You can ask Amazon buyers to leave a product review in the same compliant manner that Amazon allows you to do so. Using Helium 10’s Follow-Up or our Seller Assistant chrome extension helps semi-automate this process for you.
3. Does Helium 10 work with the handmade category?
Yep! All of our tools are compatible with the market and handmade listings.
3. Can you really make income in Amazon handmade?
Of course! I could talk about it all day but let me show you. Below is a screenshot of Helium 10’s X-Ray running on the Best Seller page for Amazon Handmade.
Many listings generate 5 figures monthly and multiple brands with several successful listings. The data proves real money is to be made here.

Best items to Sell on Amazon. What Products Sell the Best on Amazon?

Best items to Sell on Amazon. What Products Sell the Best on Amazon?

Amazon is a price-driven marketplace, meaning that people visit the Amazon site to find cheap prices on the products they want and need. So, if your price or price range isn’t the best one out of a group of the same products, you won’t be getting the sale and you’ll be stuck with inventory.

Certain items will sell better on your site while others will get the most sales by using the Amazon online marketplace. So, what products are the best items to sell on Amazon? There are two types of products that are best sold on Amazon:

#1 When Brand Differentiation Doesn’t Matter and You Have the Lowest Price

If you have brand generic products that you can offer at the lowest price, you should sell these items on Amazon. It’s not a product brand name that attracts the sale, it’s the price tag. With this type of product listing you’ll be going head-to-head with other sellers and the lowest price usually wins.

This is the main theme of Amazon. If customers want an original brand name purse, they’ll shop on that seller’s website to get it. On the flip side, if they’re shopping for a basic brown crossbody purse where brand name doesn’t matter and price does, Amazon is where they’ll go. If you offer a brandless purse, your best bet is Amazon.

#2 When You Have a Validated Differentiated Product Idea

If your product idea is unique, you’ll see Amazon product sales take off. This happens when sellers see a market need and create a feature that no one else has, or is marketing the product strongly . With the right Amazon promotional strategy, you’ll be able to get traction with an original product idea.

If the products you choose to sell on Amazon fall within one of the two categories listed above, you have a product area that has a good chance of being successful through this online marketplace. And, if your products sell, you’ll make money and empty your inventory, which are pretty good goals to achieve with any business, especially an online business.

Pharmapacks Amazon seller. 3 | Selling on Amazon With Software

Pharmapacks became the biggest Amazon seller in America through their hard work and innovative warehouse software. More and more warehouses are finding the benefits of softwares that allow you to upload, edit, and list softwares in bulk or optimize your warehouse operations.

Creating a software as powerful as Pharmapacks’ dynamic pricing model was an expensive feat (probably between 1-3.5 million dollars and several years of development). However, having a customized top-of-the-line software enabled them to lead the pack to become Amazon’s number one American seller. Alternatively, by outsourcing your softwares to a third-party company, you share the costs of development, maintenance, and innovation with the company’s various clients. You also have the benefit of using their experienced IT department in the event you need help, which frees of time for yours.

Perhaps one of the biggest benefits to outsourcing this task is your ability to shop around for the software that best suits your needs. While you’re at it, ask what others in your field recommend. Check out reviews and testimonials. This way, you don’t have to sink millions of dollars and several years into a software that’s still in beta testing. You know what to expect, and better yet- you can opt out whenever you want.

Plan of action

There’s not any off-the-shelf softwares that offer you exactly what Pharmapacks uses. But you can use companies like SkuVault and ChannelAdvisor to ensure real time up to date inventories and keep your warehouse running smoothly. When you’re able to integrate several softwares like this, you can pick and choose what works for your warehouse best.

Dropshipping on Amazon. Recent Amazon dropshipping updates

Before you jump into dropshipping on Amazon, please make sure you fully understand Amazon’s guidelines on dropshipping so you don’t end up with a suspended account.

On May 21, 2021, Amazon sent out a reminder in Seller Central stating that they’ve updated their policy page to ensure all sellers clearly understand their strict guidelines with regards to dropshipping on Amazon.

If you violate the policy in any way, you may lose the ability to sell via FBM, or even have your account suspended.

In order to fulfill orders using a drop shipper, you must adhere to the following:

  • You must be identified as the seller on all invoices, packing slips, external packaging, and any other information included or provided with the product. There should be no mention of your supplier or manufacturer.
  • You are responsible for accepting and processing returns.
  • You must comply with all of Amazon’s Terms of Servic e according to the seller agreement.

Do not — and I repeat — do not purchase products from another online retailer and have them ship the product to your customer. This is a big no-no from Amazon and they will suspend you for it.

Example: You list a coffee maker for sale on Amazon. A customer purchases the product, you purchase the same item from Walmart.com and then enter in the Amazon customer’s shipping info. The Amazon customer receives a package with Walmart identifiers on it. THIS IS NOT ALLOWED!

If a customer receives a package from Walmart, they’re going to be very confused and frustrated, as they ordered from Amazon. You may instead practice what’s called retail arbitrage , where you purchase an item from another store such as Walmart and resell it on Amazon — as long as there is no mention of Walmart on a packing slip or the packaging.

Amazon arbitrage. What is Online Arbitrage?

To get a better understanding of what online arbitrage is, let’s look at its predecessor, which is retail arbitrage.

Retail arbitrage is a relatively simple concept that involves purchasing a product from a retail outlet at a relatively low price then “flipping” it or selling it to a new marketplace for a profit. This can be a viable business model for entrepreneurs because:

✅ There’s a lower cost of entry.

✅ It doesn’t require suppliers or manufacturers.

✅ There are no production lead time concerns.

With the rise of e-commerce, the practice of arbitrage has transitioned online. Retail arbitrage now entails finding relatively low-priced items from brick-and-mortar establishments and reselling them for a profit online.

In many cases, retail and online arbitrage share some similarities, particularly when it comes to basic business rules and processes. Their greatest difference lies in their scale and execution. In online arbitrage, you’ll:

Look for a product that you can purchase for a lower price than how much it’s offered for on Amazon or on other online marketplaces

Purchase it from a supplier and have it delivered to an FBA warehouse—you can sign up for the Amazon FBA program , which doesn’t require any special license

Add the product to your listing and mark up its price to get a healthy profit margin.

Amazon FBA and How It Can Help You Grow

When it comes to online arbitrage, Amazon FBA is an invaluable asset. Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) saves you time while helping you grow your business. With it, you’d be free to focus on other aspects of your business, as Amazon would take care of storing, packing, and shipping your orders. Additionally, Amazon FBA also handles customer service, as well as returns and exchanges of your products.

Amazon FBA also enables first-time users to scale their business through free sponsored ads (up to $200), promotional clicks, and discounts on their shipments to Amazon’s fulfillment centers. New users are also eligible for free monthly storage (90 days) and removals (180 days).
