Download and print out the sales rank chart from the link above. Look at how the chart is organized. On the left side of the chart is a list of the main Amazon categories. The rest of the chart breaks down the number of items in each category, as well as the sales rank numbers that fall into the top 1%, 2%, 3%, 5%, and 10% of each category.
The lower the sales rank number, the more sales on Amazon the item generally receives. Also, the lower that sales rank number, the faster the item is usually selling. Items with faster sales and more sales are where Amazon sellers find the best profit opportunities.
Items that have an average sales rank in the top 1% in their respective category usually sell the fastest. Items in the top 2% also sell quickly, but not at the velocity that the top 1% sells at. Items that average in the top 5% are occasional sellers, so you want to be sure you are priced the lowest and that there are not too many competitors selling that item with you. Items only in the top 10% are very slow sellers and I would almost never buy an item when it has a sales rank that high.

Amazon Sales rank chart books. What does the Amazon Sales Ranking Really Mean?
An Amazon sales ranking only gives a ballpark idea about a book’s actual sales. Their system updates rankings every 60 – 90 minutes, so the numbers constantly fluctuate throughout the day. A book could have a good ranking in the morning and a worse ranking that same evening. Therefore, you never get numbers that are solid enough to make big decisions on its own. At best, the rankings can show real-time sales momentum or a lack of consumer interest.
If you want to draw any real conclusions, it’s always best to include actual sales data from more reliable sources, such as Nielsen BookScan. But, is it possible for Amazon rankings to give any reasonable insights? Here’s an example.
I helped a New York Times bestselling author launch a new book. During the pre-order campaign, we found that the Amazon sales rankings provided a decent indication of sales momentum. That’s because my author client offered a series of special gifts to encourage pre-orders. In order for people to receive the pre-order gifts, they had to go to the author’s website, provide their retailer receipt number, and tell how many copies they purchased. I captured this customer information each day in a database, and then compared the data to the book’s daily Amazon ranking over time.
What is a good Sales rank on Amazon. Sales Velocity
To better understand the Amazon sales ranking process, we need to take a look at the inner workings behind the scenes. Sales velocity is the number (and dollar amount) of your sales in a given month. Why is this information important as a ranking factor? A high monthly sales velocity will help you find favor with the Amazon ranking algorithm.
All this to say: more sales = stronger sales rank. The lower the number, the better; #1 being the best BSR you can have in a category.
It’s important to note that Amazon does place limits on sales velocity to protect its customers. This is common for many new sellers who experience spikes in sales as their brand grows. Sales velocity limits are based on the ratio of sales to factors like available inventory, seller feedback, and past sales history. It’s Amazon’s way of determining, “Is this seller generating a realistic/legitimate number of sales or is something fishy going on?” These sales velocity limits are typically in place for listings and accounts that are less than 6 months old.
When you approach or exceed your sales velocity limit, Amazon will conduct a sales velocity review. This means a temporary hold will be placed on the funds in your account along with possible product listing suspensions. Don’t panic . This is a relatively standard process. Do not worry about starting the review process ahead of time – Amazon will reach out to you if a sales velocity review needs to take place.

Amazon Electronics Sales rank. Decoding the Electronics Amazon Sales Rank Code
Most resellers rely on Sales Rank when making purchasing decisions. For reasons known only to Amazon, the category of Electronics often does not provide a category wide sales rank. Many times when scanning an Electronics product, a scouting app (like Scoutify ) will return a sales rank of 0 or N/A (Not Applicable). In almost all other categories, a rank of N/A really means that the sales rank is zero. To read more about why an item would have a zero sales rank, click here . Sometimes, however, the scouting app will return a numerical sales rank, but be very careful what you decide to do with that number.
When an Electronics sales rank number is given, it’s almost always the rank of an Electronics subcategory. One time I was out scouting and found multiples of an item that showed a rank of 92 in Electronics. The store clearance priced them at only 50 cents each! With over 27 million items in the Electronics category, 92 looked like an amazing rank. I bought a few of those items and brought them back to the house. I was preparing to send them in to FBA when I noticed that the sales rank was now showing N/A. I looked back on my scouting app and it still was showing a rank of 92. I did some more research and found out that the item I had was not ranked 92 out of the 27,000,000+ items in Electronics, but was ranked 92 out of 120 in the subcategory of Electronics > Accessories & Supplies > Blank Video Media > Minidiscs.
I was curious if this item could still possibly sell well on Amazon. I went to check Keepa to see what information they could provide about this product.
Keepa is a website that provides sales rank and pricing history for most Amazon products. Their data is not perfect, but it can give the reseller a good idea how often and for how much an item might sell. When I checked Keepa, there was no current sales rank or pricing history, so that was a dead end.
Since Keepa lead me nowhere, I decided to look at the reviews on the item’s sales page on Amazon. At first, things looked good. This item had over 100 reviews, mostly 5 star, but then I noticed that the most recent review was from 2009. The review before that was from 2008. The bulk of the reviews came from 2006-2007. Even a well-reviewed product might not still be selling today.
I concluded that this item was not worth sending in to Amazon. I now do this research (checking Keepa and product reviews) on almost every electronic item I might purchase to sell. Needless to say, I was glad I only bought a few of these items as they quickly were added to my garage sale pile.
